Band 6 Occupational Therapist

Acute Medicine

Location:Leicester Royal Infirmary/Leicester General Hospital cross site

Permanent– 37.5 hours per week – flexible working available.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our motivated and enthusiastic team working on our Acute Medicine wards at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospitals.

We are seeking applicants who are team players and enjoy the challenge of the acute setting. The Trust recognises the important role that our Medicine Therapy Team have in supporting the reduction in deconditioning of patients within UHL. You will be part of the wider Medicine Therapy Team, including the team working at Preston Lodge.

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is one of the largest and busiest NHS trusts in the country providing care for more than 1 million residents in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The Medicine therapy team are responsible for delivering a service across the medical wards at UHL, these are based at LRI and LGH. The team treat a wide variety of patients including those with frailty, respiratory illness, falls, diabetes and Parkinson's.

You will be working alongside a large Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) to enable early rehabilitation and timely discharges of patients. We are passionate about promoting independence and preventing deconditioning in the acute hospital.

You will demonstrate excellent communication, prioritisation and time management skills. This post will be suitable for a candidate who has a wide range of rotational experience, particularly with older people with a variety of comorbidities for example Parkinson's, falls and fractures.

You will join a supportive team of Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists in the Acute Medicine Team. You will receive regular supervision, appraisal and be encouraged to be involved in service development, audit and research. You will be expected to support and supervise other staff as well as provide practice placements for students.

The successful candidate would need to be flexible in their working as the service is provided over 7 days a week. The team are working to provide a collaborative approach to therapy across all systems.

You will have support to develop both your clinical and leadership skills from our Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapists and our Clinical Team Leader.

About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust:

• Be responsible for managing a complex clinical caseload from assessment to discharge/transfer of care within defined protocols, in order to facilitate a timely and safe discharge from hospital.
• To provide appropriate education to patients and carers in order to encourage patient participation in the management of their condition either on an individual or group basis.
• To liaise with, and involve patient's carers with patient's treatment as appropriate.
• Evaluate and process referrals from the designated ward(s) in order to ensure the patient receives the appropriate Occupational Therapy intervention.
• Set outcome related goals with the patient which are consistent with the standards of the department, in order to meet the needs of the patient.
• To use specialist techniques for the handling of patients with physical deficits often within confined spaces.
• Plan, deliver and progress treatment interventions using clinical reasoning and decision making skills in order to work towards and achieve identified patient goals.
• In the absence of the Clinical Specialist, to have delegated responsibility for the management of the Acute Medicine OT clinical caseload and ensure patients receive high standards of intervention at all times in accordance with the College of OT Code of Professional Conduct.
• Apply knowledge of OT process, in order to deliver appropriate treatment interventions and facilitate appropriate clinical decisions.
