Salary: Competitive, depending on experience

School Overview

This vibrant Primary and Nursery School in Evington is renowned for its inclusive ethos, strong pastoral care, and focus on nurturing emotional and social development alongside academic progress. Serving a diverse community, the school provides a safe and supportive environment where children feel valued, respected, and encouraged to thrive.

The leadership team understands that early years behaviour is often a reflection of unmet emotional or social needs. To address this, the school has invested heavily in behaviour mentoring, early intervention strategies, and SEND support. With increasing numbers of pupils requiring tailored emotional and behavioural support, the school is seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join its pastoral and SEND team.

Role Purpose

The Behaviour Mentor will support children experiencing difficulties with behaviour, emotional regulation, social interaction, or engagement in learning. Pupils may present with SEMH needs, ADHD, ASD, attachment difficulties, or delays in social and emotional development.

You will act as a consistent and calm adult, providing direct support in classrooms, small group interventions, and during unstructured times such as play or lunchtime. The role is focused on helping pupils develop self-confidence, resilience, and positive social behaviours while supporting teachers, EYFS staff, and parents to implement consistent strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver 1:1 behavioural and emotional support to pupils with additional needs

  • Lead small group interventions targeting emotional literacy, social skills, and self-regulation

  • Support children within Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 classrooms

  • Assist pupils during transitions, daily routines, and new activities

  • Support behaviour management during playtimes, lunchtimes, and other unstructured periods

  • Implement and monitor individual behaviour support plans

  • Employ play-based, restorative, and trauma-informed strategies

  • Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation for pupils

  • Observe, assess, and record pupil progress and behavioural outcomes

  • Contribute to planning, review meetings, and multi-agency discussions

  • Build effective relationships with parents, carers, and external professionals

  • Collaborate closely with teachers, SENCO, EYFS staff, and pastoral teams

  • Promote a school culture of empathy, inclusion, and mutual respect

  • Uphold safeguarding and child protection policies at all times

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient, with a strong passion for supporting young children. You will understand that challenging behaviour is a form of communication and respond with consistency, positivity, and structure.

You should demonstrate:

  • Experience working in Primary, Nursery, or EYFS settings

  • Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and attachment-informed practice

  • Ability to implement behaviour interventions and monitor outcomes effectively

  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills

  • Reflective practice and proactive problem-solving

  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic school environment

Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, or youth work are desirable but not essential.

Training, Support, and Career Development

The school offers structured induction, regular supervision, and access to high-quality CPD. Behaviour Mentors are encouraged to develop skills in behaviour management, SEMH support, SEND, and early intervention. This role provides a strong pathway into teaching, SEN support, or pastoral leadership.

What the School Offers

  • A collaborative and inclusive working environment

  • Experienced leadership and pastoral teams

  • Specialist CPD and training opportunities

  • A highly rewarding role with measurable impact on children’s lives

  • Opportunities for long-term and permanent employment

Safeguarding

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS clearance, references, and safer recruitment procedures.
