To address this, the school has invested heavily in behaviour mentoring, early intervention strategies, and SEND support. With increasing numbers of pupils requiring tailored emotional and behavioural support, the school is seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to join its pastoral and SEND team.
Role Purpose
The Behaviour Mentor will support children experiencing difficulties with behaviour, emotional regulation, social interaction, or engagement in learning. Pupils may present with SEMH needs, ADHD, ASD, attachment difficulties, or delays in social and emotional development.
You will act as a consistent and calm adult, providing direct support in classrooms, small group interventions, and during unstructured times such as play or lunchtime. The role is focused on helping pupils develop self-confidence, resilience, and positive social behaviours while supporting teachers, EYFS staff, and parents to implement consistent strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver 1:1 behavioural and emotional support to pupils with additional needs
Lead small group interventions targeting emotional literacy, social skills, and self-regulation
Support children within Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 classrooms
Assist pupils during transitions, daily routines, and new activities
Support behaviour management during playtimes, lunchtimes, and other unstructured periods
Implement and monitor individual behaviour support plans
Employ play-based, restorative, and trauma-informed strategies
Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation for pupils
Observe, assess, and record pupil progress and behavioural outcomes
Contribute to planning, review meetings, and multi-agency discussions
Build effective relationships with parents, carers, and external professionals
Collaborate closely with teachers, SENCO, EYFS staff, and pastoral teams
Promote a school culture of empathy, inclusion, and mutual respect
Uphold safeguarding and child protection policies at all times
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient, with a strong passion for supporting young children. You will understand that challenging behaviour is a form of communication and respond with consistency, positivity, and structure.
You should demonstrate:
Experience working in Primary, Nursery, or EYFS settings
Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, and attachment-informed practice
Ability to implement behaviour interventions and monitor outcomes effectively
Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
Reflective practice and proactive problem-solving
Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic school environment
Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, or youth work are desirable but not essential.
