Branch Caseworker
About this Role
UNISON’s Leicestershire County Local Government Branch is looking to recruit a full-time temporary caseworker.
Unison’s Leicestershire County Local Government Branch is a large Trade Union Branch based at Leicestershire County Council’s County Hall Offices in Glenfield, Leicestershire and covers a wide range of different employers including Local, District, Borough, Town and Parish Councils; Schools including large Multi-Academy Trusts and F.E. Colleges as well as a large number of voluntary, charitable and privately-owned businesses which work within the social care and education sectors. These employers all have a base or a connection to Leicestershire and Rutland so the post would require a significant amount of travel as part of fulfilling the job requirements.
The postholder will be directly responsible to the Branch Secretary and flexibly support the representation, administration and organising needs of the Branch.
Length of Contract: 12 month fixed-term
Mon-Thursday: 8.30am – 5.00pm Friday: 8.30am – 4.30pm including 1-hour unpaid lunch break
Benefits to include Contractual Sick Pay, Annual Leave, Maternity, Adoption and Paternity Entitlements and Travel Allowances.
The successful candidate will be subject to a probationary period following an initial induction process.
Start Date: As soon as possible.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Managing incoming employment cases to the Branch and triaging them on the Branch Call-log system
2. Advising members on the merits of their case.
3. Representing members in all the employers covered by the Branch on workplace matters including investigations, hearing and appeals covering disciplinaries; grievances; capability; attendance management; flexible working requests; action plans and restructures; TUPE transfers; redundancies; change of contracts and other matters as they arise.
4. Supporting members through Unison’s case escalation process including negotiating settlements, initiating ACAS Early Conciliation process and referring to Unison’s Regional Team regarding seeking legal advice and support.
5. Engaging in any Branch recruitment and organising processes as necessary and as required.
6. To be managed and guided by the Branch Secretary and other Branch Officers as required.
Essential Skills and Requirements:
1. Good working knowledge and application of employment law.
2. Strong case management skills including experience of representing individuals in employment matters.
3. Strong computer skills including use of email, Teams or similar communication systems and case recording applications
4. Personal and professional interest/commitment in promoting workers’ rights; trade unions; social justice and equality issues.
5. Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, communication and time management skills.
6. Excellent administrative and organisational ability.
7. Access to a vehicle to facilitate travel across a wide geographical area which may include the possession of a clean, valid driving licence or other means of achieving travel requirements.
