Faculty / Directorate
The Stephen Lawrence Research Centre (SLRC) is an exciting cross-faculty endeavour designed to support De Montfort University’s research strategy by producing and supporting groundbreaking, impact-oriented interdisciplinary research aimed at influencing public dialogues, promoting social justice, fostering inclusion, and engendering equity on a local, national and global scale. The centre has a remit that extends across the four faculties with a significant public engagement component. Broadly defined, research target areas for the centre include histories of Black, Asian and racially minoritised communities in the U.K.; the concept and practice of institutional racism; denials of justice and the social psychology of racial violence.
Building from the SLRC’s work with local schools, the centre has launched a Teaching to Transform initiative that involves the development of a teacher education programme which enables local educators to develop racial literacies and practice anti-racist pedagogies. The programme now aims to upscale the initiative to not only empower educators to acknowledge, understand and communicate more effectively about race and racism and be more responsive to how these dynamics operate within the classroom and the wider schooling environment, but to raise the profile of the programme to a wider audience of policy-makers, schools, trusts and educational organisations throughout England.
Role
The role holder will work closely with the SLRC Teaching to Transform team to lead on the design and delivery of current programme activities including CPD modules and bespoke training sessions for educators, senior leaders and other educational stakeholders. Additionally the Racial Literacy Lead will be expected to play a lead role in implementing a robust monitoring and evaluation framework, reporting on programme outcomes and tracking impact. This post will also involve a variety of research related administrative and public engagement tasks including collecting qualitative data, organising research materials, managing virtual resources, collating information for reports, drafting reports, developing monitoring and evaluation tools and assisting with the delivery of public-facing events.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with project management experience preferably within a research environment who can support the design and delivery of training sessions with educators. The Racial Literacy Lead will also be expected to play a lead role in implementing a robust monitoring and evaluation framework for the Teaching to Transform programme and reporting on outcomes, as well as oversee the Teaching to Transform working group (consisting of educational experts and leaders leaders from government, academia and educational consultancies). The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the education landscape, have experience conducting qualitative research, speaking at national conferences and have strong administrative skills. In fulfilling this role this staff member will shore up critical avenues for knowledge exchange and support the SLRC’s public engagement networking and outreach agenda. The person must be well organised and detail-oriented with the ability to manage time effectively, prioritise tasks, work on their own initiative and adapt to shifting work demands. Successful candidates will possess excellent communication skills and be able to engage a variety of diverse communities and stakeholders.
