School Overview

This Primary and Nursery School in Highfields has a long-standing reputation for providing high-quality, inclusive education with a focus on emotional and social development. Serving a diverse community in Leicester, the school prioritises early intervention, pastoral care, and supporting children with behavioural and emotional needs from Nursery through Key Stage 1.

The leadership team recognises that early behavioural challenges often reflect unmet emotional or social needs, and that early support is crucial for long-term success. The school has invested in strong pastoral frameworks, SEND support, and behaviour mentoring programs to support pupils with SEMH needs, ADHD, ASD, and other developmental challenges.

Role Purpose

The Behaviour Mentor will work with pupils experiencing difficulties with behaviour, emotional regulation, and social interaction. You will provide direct support both in classrooms and during small group interventions, helping pupils develop resilience, self-confidence, and positive social skills.

This role involves close collaboration with teachers, EYFS staff, SENCO, and parents to ensure consistent strategies are implemented across the school environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 behavioural and emotional support to pupils in Nursery, Reception, and KS1

  • Lead small group interventions targeting social skills, emotional literacy, and self-regulation

  • Support children during classroom activities, transitions, and unstructured periods

  • Assist pupils in managing emotions and behaviour during playtimes and lunchtimes

  • Implement and monitor individual behaviour support plans

  • Use restorative, play-based, and trauma-informed approaches

  • Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation

  • Observe, assess, and record pupil progress and intervention outcomes

  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCO, EYFS staff, and pastoral teams

  • Build strong, professional relationships with parents and carers

  • Contribute to planning, review meetings, and multi-agency support discussions

  • Promote a school culture of inclusion, empathy, and respect

  • Uphold safeguarding and child protection procedures consistently

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be emotionally intelligent, patient, and resilient, with a strong passion for supporting young children. You will understand that behaviour is a form of communication and respond with empathy, structure, and consistency.

Candidates should have:

  • Experience working in Primary, Nursery, or EYFS environments

  • Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, ADHD, ASD, and attachment-informed approaches

  • Confidence implementing behaviour interventions and monitoring outcomes

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Emotional resilience and reflective practice

  • A proactive, flexible approach to supporting pupils and staff

Relevant qualifications in education, childcare, psychology, youth work, or mental health are desirable.

Training and Professional Development

The school provides structured induction, supervision, and access to specialist CPD. Behaviour Mentors are encouraged to develop skills in early intervention, SEMH, SEND, and behaviour support, with pathways to teaching, pastoral leadership, or SEN careers.

What the School Offers

  • Inclusive, collaborative, and supportive working environment

  • Experienced leadership and pastoral teams

  • Access to specialist CPD and training opportunities

  • Opportunity to make a measurable impact on children’s development

  • Long-term employment and career progression opportunities

Safeguarding

The school is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All staff appointments are subject to enhanced DBS checks, references, and safer recruitment procedures
