School Overview

This inclusive Primary and Nursery School in the heart of Leicester City Centre prides itself on creating a welcoming and nurturing environment where children can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Serving a highly diverse community, the school places a strong emphasis on early intervention, pastoral care, and supporting pupils with varying behavioural and emotional needs.

The leadership team recognises that early years behaviour often reflects underlying emotional or developmental challenges. With a growing number of pupils requiring additional support across Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1, the school has invested in robust pastoral systems, behaviour mentoring, and SEND provision.

Role Purpose

The Behaviour Mentor will support children experiencing difficulties with emotional regulation, social interaction, behaviour for learning, or engagement in school routines. Pupils may present with SEMH needs, ADHD, ASD, attachment difficulties, or developmental delays affecting social and emotional skills.

You will act as a consistent, calm, and trusted adult, supporting children in classrooms, small group interventions, and during unstructured times such as play and lunch. By nurturing relationships and implementing structured strategies, you will help pupils develop self-confidence, resilience, and social skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver 1:1 emotional and behavioural support for pupils with additional needs

  • Lead small group interventions focusing on social skills, self-regulation, and emotional literacy

  • Support pupils within Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 classrooms

  • Assist with daily transitions, routines, and coping strategies

  • Support behaviour management during playtimes, lunchtimes, and other unstructured periods

  • Implement behaviour support plans and monitor pupil progress

  • Use play-based, restorative, and trauma-informed strategies

  • Model positive behaviour and emotional regulation for pupils

  • Observe, assess, and record pupil behaviour, and report outcomes

  • Contribute to planning, review meetings, and multi-agency discussions

  • Build strong, professional relationships with parents and carers

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, EYFS staff, SENCO, and pastoral teams

  • Uphold safeguarding and child protection policies consistently

  • Promote a school culture of empathy, inclusion, and respect

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be compassionate, calm, and emotionally resilient, with a genuine passion for supporting young children. You will understand that challenging behaviour is often a form of communication and respond with patience, consistency, and positivity.

You should demonstrate:

  • Experience working in Primary, Nursery, or EYFS settings

  • Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, ASD, ADHD, or attachment-informed practice

  • Confidence delivering behaviour interventions and tracking outcomes

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills

  • Emotional resilience and reflective practice

  • A proactive, flexible approach in a dynamic school environment

Qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, youth work, or mental health are desirable but not essential.

Training, Support, and Career Development

The school provides comprehensive induction, regular supervision, and access to specialist CPD. Behaviour Mentors can undertake training in SEMH, SEND, behaviour management, and trauma-informed practice. This role offers a clear pathway into teaching, pastoral leadership, or SEN support careers.

  • Supportive, inclusive, and collaborative working environment

  • Experienced leadership and pastoral teams

  • High-quality CPD and specialist training opportunities

  • A role with significant impact on children’s development
